The sad suicide of Deborah Jeane Palfrey

This whole vicious process does nothing to make our Department of Justice look better. The inconsistencies if not injustices can be found at every level:
-Ms. Palfrey's business was prosecuted when reportedly eighty-something other businesses in metro DC are not being prosecuted.
-As ever, the girls are being chivvied into court and into the penal system, and the so-called johns are not.
-A wider social scene that includes a lot of young women acting basically as underemployed prostitutes, and sometimes being married off as such, is driven by corporations in every business from fashion to publishing to lobbying.
-And then there's that little matter of what are figuratively called whores, in--for example--the news media.

I have to disagree, somewhat
First, only a complete ass thinks prostitution should be illegal. I sure wish it was not only legal, but that there was a professional training pathway for the practitioners. There are way to many people out there that are bad at sex.
That said, Margie Burns ignores the broader observation that prostitutes are just as subject to freewill as bookies, scam artists, and blackjack dealers.
But this statement, "A wider social scene that includes a lot of young women acting basically as underemployed prostitutes, and sometimes being married off as such, is driven by corporations in every business from fashion to publishing to lobbying." is an example of the pathetic voice of the helpless victim. Let's rewrite this in active voice (with proper grammar) just to see how silly it really is. "Corporations in every business, from fashion to publishing, are driving a wider social scene that includes a lot of young women acting as underemployed prostitutes and these corporations sometimes marry them off as prostitutes."
So once we eliminate the passive voice, Burns is telling us corporations force a woman to marry for money, or to have sex for money.
Finally, the customers do go through the system, but it usually takes a sting operation to catch them, rather than a bust. This complaint is as off-the-mark as someone remarking that it is a miscarriage of justice to prosecute a drug dealer and not the drug users.
What happened to Palfry was sad, but she was the one who committed suicide (barring any assassination plot), and any person who blames someone other than her for such a cowardly act misunderstands the essential difference between liberty and freedom.
However, I definitely agree there are serious problems in our justice system when it comes to prosecuting perpetrators of victim-less crimes, rather than going after corporations that do real and lasting harm to millions of people.
